Our vision for Hamburg-Rahlstedt’s future community center, awarded first prize in an ideas competition, is deeply rooted in the commitment of Rahlstedt residents who have long advocated for a communal space that meets diverse neighborhood needs.
The urban design of our proposal incorporates two key elements: an eastern extension that continues the neighboring building's volume, creating a forecourt, and a a newly created green space on the western half of the plot, integrating the existing trees. The main part of the building is situated between these elements.

A longitudinal structure is housing functional areas divides the building into the eastern extension and a westward-facing section. Three large spaces – the foyer, an event hall, and a community kitchen with a terrace – define the lower stories. The upper floors offer flexible spaces for adaptive office-like uses.
The building’s compact footprint preserves a significant portion of the site as green space. Apart from the building’s core and the extension, the structure is designed as a timber frame construction. A green facade provides natural shading, while partially intensive green roofing supports rainwater retention.
On the north facade, the canopy marks the entrance. Otherwise, the north facade is designed modestly in favor of the open west facade, which maximally opens the building towards the Rahlstedt center.
The study of Detlev von Liliencron (1844-1909), a famous poet from Rahlstedt, is showcased as a display window, making it accessible to everyone at all times.
The foyer can be opened along the garden side with sliding doors. This allows a gastronomic use to extend into the adjacent garden. The space is highly flexible due to its size and a ceiling height of 6.5 meters, making it suitable for representative exhibition formats.
